Red Light Therapy For Breastfeeding Comfort

Red Light Therapy: A Secret Weapon for Breastfeeding Moms?

If you are a breastfeeding mom, you’ve probably heard of Laser Therapy (or photobiomodulation-PBM or low-level laser therapy-LLLT). In the U.S., we often call it Red Light Therapy-RLT. But before you think this is some “magic wand” that will fix your life, let’s talk doctor-to-mother for a second.

As a physician and IBCLC, I love my Red Light device. I use it daily at Lactation Station, and the results are incredible. But here is the truth: The laser doesn’t fix a bad latch. YOU do.

What is Red Light Therapy?

It’s a safe, low-level red or near-infrared light applied directly to the skin. It doesn’t burn or cut; it provides gentle energy to your cells. Think of it like a battery charger for your body: it helps your cells work better, improves circulation, and speeds up recovery.

Is Red Light Therapy Safe?

No breastfeeding-specific contraindications have been identified for RLT/PBM/LLLT in the available medical literature. Multiple studies have specifically enrolled lactating women and reported no adverse effects on mothers or infants.

The therapy is non-pharmacological and non-systemic, meaning there is no drug transfer through breast milk to consider.

That said, the general contraindications and precautions for RLT apply regardless of breastfeeding status:

These contraindications/precautions are not related to nipple trauma during breastfeeding.

How We Use it to Help You:

During our sessions, we might use Red Light to support your comfort in several situations:

The “Catch”

I always tell my clients: “Laser is for healing, but Latch is for the cure.”

If your baby has a shallow latch, or your pump/flange is not well fitted, the laser will heal the wound today, but the baby, or the pump, will just break it again tomorrow.

At Lactation Station, we don’t just address the pain. We use the red light therapy to give you immediate relief so that we have the peace of mind to focus on what really matters: fixing the mechanics of the latch or your flange fitting.
